Day 3 - Nagano and Asahi Oktoberfest

I took the Shinkansen up to Nagano to see the snow monkeys in the hot springs in Jigokudani Yaen Koen. It took about 4 hours total to get there including the 1/2 hour hike to the mountain. It rained all day long but the hike up was beautiful and totally worth it. It was only about ¥500 to get in. It was incredible. There were about 200 monkeys running around freely. They were not afraid of people at all treating all the tourists as new scenery, running around your legs and playing with one another. Apparently the family trees of all the monkeys are recorded and they all have names.

In the evening I ended up going to the Asahi Oktoberfest celebration in Hibiya park. This was insanity. The crowd was basically drunken business men and foreigners from all over. They put this festival on partnered with Lowenbrau beer and it lasted for about 3 days. It was really strange. There were Japanese people dressed in traditional German costume and singing German songs that were translated into Japanese and eating German sausages with sauerkraut with chopsticks.

So, basically, a "What if the other side had won World War II" scenario.

That's quite cool - catching Oktoberfest in Japan. The Japanese even have shows to learn german on tv. English, and probably french too.
